‘Each piece has an energy, a meaning, a spirit. It’s a narrative or a story. If a client wants something for a building, I think what’s beyond the company, what’s the spirit, because the paper itself has a spirit.’

Does she sense a shared philosophy with other crafts?

‘For me, craft is understanding the inherent tension between tradition and making something to suit today. It’s also about respecting nature and life and making something that will be worthwhile for someone.’

Did she have to compromise?

‘When I started, I wanted to control it all, but if you want to make something “perfect” then make it with a machine. Washi has my feeling, and also something which I cannot handle. Making these pieces is about design and skill, but also chance. The final piece depends a lot on temperature and humidity.

‘When we make the coloured patterns, everyone pours their bucket of dyed fibres at the same time, but everyone will have their own timing or force, so only 70 per cent of the original intent is in the finish. Splashing is design, but there is also an element of natural choice – where the water falls, how hard I flick it. The end result is about a willingness to open up to chance, and allowing plans to change as nature impinges itself on the process.’

She smiles again, nods slightly. She’s busy; we have a distillery to get to.
